This course will provide you with a range skills and knowledge to excel within the health and social care environment, both home and abroad. Today’s existing health and social care organisations extremely varied and dynamic, and so successful practitioners need to be forward thinking and well-rounded. This course will offer you opportunities to use real-life case studies that draw on prioritisation, negotiation, and care planning skills.

Our lecturers are experts in their fields, and all have solid hands-on industry experience, and have been directly involved in the design of this course. Our location in London, with world-class private and public healthcare, has more than 90 NHS hospitals and a host of private hospitals and social care organisations, offering you unrivalled opportunities in the sector.

You will graduate with a solid sectoral awareness and sound understanding of health and social care. This should enable you to take advantage of the vast jobs skills that draw on these, and any entrepreneurial opportunities that the sector offers.

Key Features

On successful completion of the course a student will be able to:

  • Critically analyse and evaluate healthcare systems; by exploring how health and social care providers and organisations are managed, regulated, integrated and their ability (severally and collectively) to meet the health and social care needs of the populations they serve.
  • Investigate the diverse range of health and social care work and the different roles and responsibilities of professionals operating within the sector.
  • Examine the biological, psychological and sociological factors of human development, to critically analyse and evaluate their influence upon the health and wellbeing of individuals throughout the lifespan.
  • Critically appraise factors that can impact the mental health and wellbeing of individuals, groups and communities, and explore services that may be available to provide support to individuals experiencing mental health difficulties.
  • Critique theories and concepts of vulnerability, associated support and empowerment, and analyse the importance of maintaining professional boundaries when advocating for, supporting or caring for persons at risk.
  • Use current and relevant evidence to critically analyse the nature of health and social inequalities and evaluate their relationship to a range of contemporary issues identified locally, nationally, internationally and globally.

  • Students will be aware of the legal obligations that apply when identifying and addressing safeguarding issues
  • Students will be able to define, analyse, and critically evaluate healthcare systems

What you'll do

You will be allocated a Personal Development Tutor at the start of your course. This will be your first point of contact for questions about your studies. Regular sessions with your tutor ensure they will be up to date with your academic progress and able to offer insightful guidance to assist you in reaching your full potential.

All our students at University of Central Lancashire London have the opportunity to complete our Employability Award during their time with us. Our aim for the Employability Award is to increase students’ awareness, knowledge and skills to succeed in the graduate job market, postgraduate study or business enterprise.

All assignments during your course are designed with your career progression in mind and give you opportunities to develop and improve transferable skills employers look for.

Assessment

We’ll assess your progress through a variety of methods from coursework, group assignments, activity-based assignments and exams. You can expect to part take in on-going problem-solving activities, projects and presentations. You’ll also be able to access support material through our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

Entry requirements

96 UCAS tariff points from 3 A Levels or equivalent, e.g. BCC.

 

Alternatively;

Irish Leaving Certificate: BBCCC.

Scottish Highers: BBCCC.

BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma: DMM in a related subject.

International Baccalaureate Diploma: 24 points.

All applicants are required to have at least 3 GCSEs at grade C, or grade 4, or above, including English and Maths.

Candidates must demonstrate a certificated level of proficiency of at least IELTS 6.0 (Academic level) or equivalent English Language qualification.

Candidates who meet the above entry criteria, but have been out of study for 5 years, will be required to pass an academic interview.

We will also consider applications to level 4 entry from those who are not able to meet our normal course entry requirements but can demonstrate that they have achieved the required level of knowledge and skills and have the potential to benefit from the course, for example: through relevant work experience and professional development.

For Foundation entry, a UCAS Tariff Entry of 40 points.

Candidates who meet the above entry criteria, but have been out of study for 5 years, will be required to pass an academic interview.

We will also consider applications to level 3 entry from those who are not able to meet our normal course entry requirements but can demonstrate that they have achieved the required level of knowledge and skills and have the potential to benefit from the course, for example: through relevant work experience and professional development.

Non-Standard Entry (Mature 21+): We require an academic Level 3 qualification (Ofqual recognised) OR a Level 2 qualification in the desired field of study accompanied with work experience within this field in the last 5 years.  Candidates in this category would be required to pass an academic interview.

Many health and social care graduates work in roles across education, health, public services, and the charity sector. There are a variety of opportunities across the NHS, local authorities and social services, charities, not-for-profits and community organisations, as well as schools, colleges, early years organisations or adult education settings. Health and Social Care graduates may decide to progress onto further study at postgraduate level, as many health-related careers, including social work, nursing, occupational therapy, counselling, and speech and language therapy, need further training for specialism.

Scholarships and Support

Top Achievers

Scholarships of £2,000 are available for the overall Top Achievers in Year 0 (Foundation Year), Year 1 and Year 2.

The winners are presented with their scholarships during our Top Achievers event which is hosted twice a year. The scholarship is applied to tuition fees for the next academic year.

Travel Bursary

The Travel Bursary has been designed to help students cover the costs of studying at university in the city each semester. Eligible students can receive a payment of £250 for each semester, with the opportunity of receiving up to £500 per Academic Year.

Requirements:

  • Studying for an undergraduate degree
    90% minimum attendance across all modules for the semester
    Submitted all assessments on time (If an assessment offence has been proven, it will be considered as non-submission)

The eligibility of students will be assessed at the end of Semester 1 and Semester 2. If you qualify to receive the Travel Bursary for Semester 1, the required attendance and assessment criteria would have to be maintained during Semester 2 to qualify for the second payment at the end of Semester 2.

Payment:

  • For qualifying students, the payment will be £250 after the assessment results are confirmed for Semester 1, and £250 after the results are confirmed for Semester 2.
  • You will be notified by e-mail as to what date you can expect payment to be made.
  • Should you qualify for Travel Bursary, you will be able to enter your bank details in a secure repository on VLE which will be used by Finance to make the payment. You will be solely responsible for ensuring the accuracy of these details. Central Lancashire London will not be liable for any loss as a result of incorrect payment details.

Attendance Monitoring:

  • You can keep track of your attendance online through the VLE and this is updated on a daily basis.
  • Please note that if you record your in-class attendance later than 10:30 am (if you have a lecture in the morning) and 2:30 pm (if you have a lecture in the afternoon), you will be marked as absent.
  • If you believe you are having a technological issue registering your in-class attendance via VLE, please make an attendance enquiry through VLE for assistance. 

Central Lancashire London reserves the right to withdraw the bursary at any time if deemed necessary.

DSA Grant

This request is available for students who are unable to pay the contribution of £200 towards the DSA equipment. We will need a copy of the Disabled Student Allowance Entitlement letter from Student Finance before we can assess your application.
