My path to being a career consultant has been non-linear or 'portfolio' – comprising varied experiences, skills and knowledge that have led to a passion for supporting and gaining insight from diverse groups of people over the past 15 years.

As a Media Researcher gathering data from journalists, bloggers and other media contacts both in the UK and German-speaking region (Switzerland, Austria and Germany), I leveraged skills in cultural intelligence, languages, data collection, research and autonomy as this involved working remotely.

Working in adult education and the not-for-profit sector gave me considerable insight into the real challenges faced by underrepresented communities across North Kensington - one of the most culturally diverse yet deprived areas of London. Supporting these learners reinforced the importance of relevant, inclusive and oftentimes literally accessible content–delivered across a variety of outreach settings, including libraries, community centres, and on-site premises of partner organisations – key stakeholders in supporting diverse communities. Demonstrating empathy, collaboration, resilience, flexibility and adaptability often cited as core employability skills by employer was critical in order to be a genuine and effective facilitator.

Being a Careers Consultant in Higher Education has enabled me to draw upon my experiences and skills, guiding students with real-world, inclusive Careers support. This includes module-specific materials co-produced with academics, design and delivery of Careers curriculum led by student feedback, knowledge and implementation of the Graduate Outcomes Survey (GOS) to improve and maximise students' career success – the ultimate goal of embarking on study programmes and improving opportunities for students from diverse background.
