Whether you’re thinking about applying to UCLan London, preparing to start your course, or already have an offer, you’ll find answers to many of the questions students ask most often. From Student Finance and entry requirements to Welcome Day, accommodation, disability support and tuition fees, our FAQs are here to help you understand what to expect and make your journey to university as straightforward as possible.

How do I apply for a UCLan programme?

You can apply directly through our online admission portal University of Central Lancashire London

What qualifications do I need to apply?

Entry requirements vary by programme, but we use a holistic Admissions approach that looks beyond grades to consider your overall potential, relevant experience and personal statement. Check the specific entry criteria for your chosen programme on our course pages or get in touch if you are unsure on how your qualifications compare.

I have an offer with pending conditions, what happens next?

You will need to meet any conditions attached to your offer (for example, achieving specific grades, submitting final transcripts, interview or English test). Our admissions team will review your evidence as it comes in and confirm your place once all conditions are satisfied. If you are worried about meeting a condition, contact us as early as possible.

Can I get credit for previous study (APL)?

Yes, Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) allows you to gain credit toward your programme based on previous study or relevant professional experience. You'll need to submit supporting evidence for assessment and our team can advise on what is required for your specific course.

How do I submit my application through UCAS and how long does a decision take?

To apply, you will need to register with UCAS and complete your application through UCAS Hub (UCAS's online application platform).
As part of your application, you will need to:
•    Choose your course(s); you can apply to up to five undergraduate courses, including your choice at UCLan London
•    Complete your personal details and education history
•    Write your personal statement
•    Arrange for a reference to be submitted on your behalf (usually from a teacher, advisor or professional referee)
•    Pay the UCAS application fee

You can apply at any point during the UCAS application cycle, though it's worth checking key UCAS deadlines, as some apply if you also want to be considered by certain dates.
Once you submit, your application goes through UCAS first, then is forwarded to us. We aim to make a decision as quickly as possible once we receive it, though timelines can vary depending on the volume of applications and the time of year. You can track the progress of your application including any decisions made  through the UCAS Hub at any time and we'll contact you directly if we need any additional information or documentation.

Am I eligible for student Finance?

To qualify for the undergraduate loan, you must be:

  • Living in the UK, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man for 3 years before starting their course
  • Either a UK national or Irish citizen, settled under the EU Settlement Scheme
  • Granted indefinite leave to remain for other reasons
  • A child of a Swiss national and have a settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme
  • An EEA or Swiss worker, or the family member of an EEA or Swiss Worker, and has settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme
  • Humanitarian protection or the family member of someone with this status
  • Refugee status or the family member of someone with this status
  • Stateless status or the family member of someone with this status
  • Leave to remain under section 67 of the Immigration Act

For information on eligibility please refer to the government website: https://www.gov.uk/student-finance/who-qualifies.

I am an EU national who does not normally live in England. Will I be eligible?

EU students who do not normally live in England should be eligible for the tuition fee loan if they study at an English University. They must have been ordinarily resident for the previous 3 years anywhere in the EEA/Switzerland and have an EU Settlement status.

What type of evidence will I need to provide?

Each student will be asked for different types of evidence. If you are a UK national, you can provide your passport number during the online application, or send the original passport in the post.

If you have a residency permit, you will need to send this by post. If you are an EU national, you will need to provide your EU passport or ID card, a copy of your share code for your EU Settlement Status.

If you are an EEA migrant worker and are applying for the maintenance loan, you will be asked to provide your contract of employment, P60, and three months’ payslips. You will also be asked for further payslips throughout the academic year. You may also need to send further evidence of your residency history, or evidence of income.

Student Finance will inform you of any documents they require. You should login your online Student Finance account regularly to check if any further documents have been requested.

Can I receive the fee loan if I have previously studied an undergraduate course?

If you already hold an undergraduate degree, you will not be eligible for the tuition fee loan. This also applies if you self-funded the course or it was achieved outside the UK. If you studied an undergraduate course before but did not complete it, your entitlement to a tuition fee loan may be restricted.

Student Finance will only allow one extra gift per year of study; therefore, your funding will be limited if you previously studied for two years or more.
Student Finance will use the following calculation to determine your tuition fee entitlement: Length of current course + 1 gift year – years of previous study = years of tuition fee funding left. For example: 3 (length or course) + 1 (gift year) - 2 (years of previous study) = 2 years of funding left.
If you do not have enough years of funding left to cover every year of your new course, then you will be required to self-fund your tuition fees for any year that is not covered. Alternatively, you can appeal to Student Finance on the grounds of compelling personal reasons if you did not finish your previous course due to medical reasons or bereavement. You would need to provide documented evidence of this dated during the time you previously studied

How do I pay my tuition fees?

All University of Central Lancashire London programmes are eligible for student finance through Student Finance England. Tuition Fee Loans are obtained from Student Finance England and are used to pay the cost of your tuition fees. You apply for a Tuition Fee Loan through Student Finance England; please refer to the website here to check deadlines and eligibility

When do I receive my Student Finance?

We confirm attendance and registration by submitting an electronic file to the SLC. We do this daily and include all fully enrolled students whose student loan information is available to the University. This ensures that students’ registration and attendance are confirmed automatically and as soon as possible, in most circumstances within 24 hours of the information becoming available. You are a fully registered student once you have attended your first class of teaching; this applies to both new and returning students.

Once the steps above have been completed, tuition fees are paid directly to the university and we apply these to your university account. Your maintenance loan is paid into your nominated bank account. Possible reasons for not receiving payment include: you have not supplied your NI number to the SLC or that you are not fully enrolled at the University.

Which types of benefits are affected?

The main types of benefits that are affected by becoming a student are:
▪ Universal credit
▪ Housing benefit
▪ Income support
▪ Jobseeker’s allowance (JSA)
 ▪ Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
▪ Carer’s allowance

There are different guidelines and exemptions for each type of benefit, so you may still be eligible to claim depending on your circumstances. You may be eligible to receive child benefit, pension credit, child tax credit and working tax credit. In some circumstances, you may be eligible to claim some benefits if you need a time out of study. Students who have a mental health problem, long-term illness or any other disability can also apply for Disabled Student Allowance (DSA) to help cover study-related costs.

Why are my government-funded benefits affected by becoming a student?

Your benefits are likely to be significantly reduced when you start studying, as your entitlement to a student loan will be classed as a form of income. Even if you do not apply for student loans, your benefit entitlement may still be reduced.

For undergraduate students, usually your full entitlement of maintenance loan will be classed as income. For postgraduate master’s students, 30% of your postgraduate loan will be classed as income.

If your course is part time and you get universal credit, none of your loan will be classed as income. If you receive benefits from the Department for Work and Pensions, you are responsible for informing the Department of Work and Pensions that you are becoming a student.
Please be aware that if you fail to declare that you are becoming a student, you may be fraudulently claiming benefits that you are not entitled to and could become ineligible for financial support in the future
